About Mennonites
This short, engaging book gives a brief account of what Mennonites believe. From the beginnings of the Anabaptist (or Mennonite) movement in the 16th century, to biblical interpretation, baptism, understandings of the church, ethics, and the complex question of denominationalism, John Roth provides a solid framework for on-going conversations about faithful discipleship in the Mennonite church today.

Hutterite
What wold compel a daily newspaper journalist, raised in an affluent family in the South, to abandon his career and embark on a spiritual odyssey that would take him, his wife, and young daughter to live among the Plain people of the prairies, The Hutterian Brethren?

From 1995 to 2002, the author and his family gave up all claims to personal property, moved to Starland Colony in Minnesota, and joined the often contradictory Old World existence of the Hutterites, whose isolated faming communes stretch across the American Great Plains and the prairie provinces of Canada. In Nightwatch, the author explores the modern-day expression of Hutterianism, born amid the flames and persecution of the Reformation and transplanted in the 1870s from Russia to the western United States. This is a story not only of spiritual questioning, but an inquiry into what it is be "strangers among strangers," looking at the inner callings that bring people together, and in some cases drive them apart.

Women
This book contains four stories of survival. The storytellers, two women and two men, believed in a loving God who cared about humankind. Thanks to Stalin's reign of terror they found themselves in many life-threatening circumstances where God appeared not to care. All four persons struggled with doubt, fear and despair. Like Job of old, they questioned God and like him they also affirmed faith.

Spirituality
Many Christians enter a "dark night" at some point during their lives, a period when they feel abandoned by God and experience a dryness in their spiritual lives. Daniel P. Schrock roots the dark night experience in Scripture, but also explores how it can express itself in one's vocation, marriage and family life, and even in the life of a congregation.

Peace
Gerald Shenk has traveled to and lived in many difficult places. he goes to teach--and to spot people who act out of hope. When he began to feel fortified by what he discovered, even foolishly rich, he wrote what he had witnessed and heard for the rest of us.

Hope Indeed! is his collection of stories of stunningly ordinary people behaving with extraordinary hope. These include Ned Wyse, a farmer/pastor in Michigan who was randomly chosen for beating by some neighborhood kids, the Palestinian parents who gave their young murdered son's organs to ill Jewish children, Michael Weisser and his family who took food to the white supremacists who had harassed them mercilessly, and more.

Peace
Timothy J Geddert offers concrete help to Christian communities as they struggle with ethical questions and try to determine appropriate ethical guidelines. His goal is to encourage churches to think biblically when confronted with difficult ethical questions. What would Jesus have done? What does the Bible teach? How can we find biblical guidance?

Geddert's study of a few controversial issues--love your enemies (nonviolence), sexuality, divorce and remarriage, homosexuality, money and possessions--demonstrates how the discerning community can work toward consensus.

Autobiography
These compelling memoirs trace the effects of a tumultuous century on mainly rural Mennonites. Depression-era babies whose youth and adulthood were bracketed by World War II, the Korean War,the Vietnam and Cold WAr, they also saw the emergence of a new global world.

As their frame of reference shifted from the rural to the professional, many of these writers assumed key roles in leading and shaping Mennonite institutions. For all of them, some kind of service-to their church, to their community, to the world-was an imperative.

Theologically, they embraced an evangelicalism rooted in sixteenth century Anabaptism and a commitment to the Anabaptist vision of Harold Bender. in their time of social change, Anabaptism offered these sixteen individuals an explanation of what they believed and helped them nourish that centuries old sense of being an alternative to magisterial Protestantism.

These remarkable accounts reflect the experiences and stories similar to those of hundreds of Mennonites whose lives were changed during this disruptive era. By confronting their own beliefs and faith practices, they gradually transformed the Mennonite church. No more could Mennonites be Die Stillen im Lande.

Contributors include, Esther K Augsburger, Myron S Augsbuger, Titus W Bender, James R Bomberger, Gerald R Brunk, Ray Gingerich, Samuel L Horst, Albert N Keim, C Norman Kraus, Nancy V. Lee, Harold D Lehman, John R Martin, Paul Peachey, Calvin W Redekop, Calvin E Shenk, and Edward B Stoltzfus.
