| What wold compel a daily newspaper journalist, raised in an affluent family in the South, to abandon his career and embark on a spiritual odyssey that would take him, his wife, and young daughter to live among the Plain people of the prairies, The Hutterian Brethren? From 1995 to 2002, the author and his family gave up all claims to personal property, moved to Starland Colony in Minnesota, and joined the often contradictory Old World existence of the Hutterites, whose isolated faming communes stretch across the American Great Plains and the prairie provinces of Canada. In Nightwatch, the author explores the modern-day expression of Hutterianism, born amid the flames and persecution of the Reformation and transplanted in the 1870s from Russia to the western United States. This is a story not only of spiritual questioning, but an inquiry into what it is be "strangers among strangers," looking at the inner callings that bring people together, and in some cases drive them apart. | Michael Bruhn, his younger sister Gudryn, and their widowed mother
live in a castle in Moravia. Madame Bruhn's field workers had fled two
months before when her husband died, fearing he had the plague. She now
illegally welcomed Hutterites to her estate to farm the land, giving
them permission to build a Bruderhof because she felt they worshipped
God in the right way. When a doctor wearing ragged clothing
appeared at their gate, Michael thought he, too, must be a Hutterite.
He learned later that this was the famed doctor, Paracelsus. When
Michael's sister, Gudryn, became ill, this 'doctor in rags' was able to
help her. Michael was impressed and began to plan when he could be a
doctor. And then tragedy struck the Bruhn household. They were
arrested along with the Hutterites. Their land was taken by King
Ferdinand. Michael was put into chains with the Hutterites to become a
galley slave. Through an exciting escape Michael found Paracelsus.
He decided to become both a Hutterite and a missionary doctor all
because of Paracelsus, a 'doctor in rags,' who helped people.

| The Hutterian Brethren, or Hutterites, had been practicing community of
goods for more than a century when Andreas Ehrenpreis was elected bishop
of the brotherhood in 1639. He was to occupy that office until his death in 1662,
some 23 fateful years.
In the face of severe crises, which included war, increased persecution, and
the complete expulsion of the Hutterites from their former homes in Moravia,
Ehrenpreis initiated a remarkable revival and reformulation of Hutterian
faith and practice.
Andreas Ehrenpreis' reforms left a lasting imprint on the Hutterites, leading
the historian Robert Friedmann to call Ehrenpreis the second founder of the
Hutterian Brethren. Nevertheless, no full-length study has ever been done on
the Hutterites of this period and their influential bishop. Wes Harrison thus
brings much needed light to this important chapter of the Hutterite
experience.
Harrison's ground-breaking study makes use of all available sources, the
majority of which have never before been analyzed. His work and approach
have been described as meticulous, mature research marked by empathy,
sound judgment, and scholarly integrity (Professor Werner Packull, Conrad
Grebel College, University of Waterloo).
Readers interested in the development of Radical Reforming groups, in the
history of communal Christian groups, and especially in the history and
development of the Hutterian Brethren, will want to read this detailed and
well-crafted book. | | | | Rachel, A Hutterite Girl | View shopping basket | | by Rachel Maendel

| Peter Riedemann (1506-1556) was born in Hirschberg, Silesia, and
was a cobbler by trade. The earliest we hear about him is that he was
imprisoned from 1529-1532 at Gmunden, Upper Austria, on account of his
faith. This strongly suggests that he had joined the Anabaptist
movement there between 1527 and 1529. The fact that Riedemann was
able--at the age of twenty-three or twenty-four--to write such a
comprehensive work during his imprisonment shows that he must have been
one of the strongest and most active leaders among the Anabaptist of
his period. Copyright 1993 Plough Publishing House | | | | An Annotated Hutterite Bibliography | View shopping basket | | compiled by Maria H. Krisztinkovic

| Maria H. Krisztinkovich inherited an interest in Anabaptist-Hutterite
writings and artifacts from her father, Bela Krisztinkovich, a noted
collector and ethnographer from Budapest, Hungary. During more than three
decades, Maria Krisztinkovich collected and organized references to
Anabaptist-Hutterite materials. Her work as librarian at the University of
British Columbia facilitated this task. Eventually her contact with
professor Werner Packull led to the conversion of her massive Hutterite
bibliography into a computer data base, a task overseen by professor Peter
C. Erb of Wilfrid Laurier University.
The resulting bibliography is a researcher's goldmine. Included in the more
than 2,600 individual entries are many extremely rare items located in
eastern European archives. In 1996 prof. Packull took the manuscript with
him on his sabbatical leave to Europe. During this time, the eastern
European entries were checked and corrected by Rev. Oliver E. Szebeni of
Hungary.
The usefulness of the bibliography is enhanced by English annotations, so
that readers not conversant in eastern European languages can still benefit
from all entries. | | | | Hutterite Society | View shopping basket | | by John A. Hostetler

| While in prison during 1540-42, Riedemann writes for the Lutheran
ruler, Philip of Hesse. He explains the Hutterite goal of a renewed
community and dispels popular misconceptions. Riedemann creatively
weaves together a fresh reading of the Bible with the classical creeds.
He produces a powerful synthesis of Scripture and tradition on which to
Christian community. His dynamic vision of radical and communal
discipleship still challenges believers toward a greater faithfulness
to the Lord and to each other. Riedemann's Confession
gives theological grounding for the Hutterite understanding of economic
communalism and offers practical examples. It still guides Hutterite
communities. Here is John J Friesen's English translation of the
1565 German edition in which he offers a new history of Riedemann. Volume 9 in the Classics of the Radical Reformation series. Copyright 1999.
