Being confronted with the need to exercise public power, he was led to reassess and critique the traditional Mennonite approach to social ethics. From the introduction to this book, Burkholder says: "What impressed me most was the ambiguity of power. ... Eventually I came to see life dialectically according to which multiple demands required one to choose between equally valid but contradictory obligations."
