| The Goshen Conference on Religion and Science was established as a yearly conference to explore ways of bridging the often-perceived gap between religion and science. Each year the conference features one primary speaker who presents lectures and also interacts in dialogue with conference participants. It is the intention of the conference organizers to publish a full record of the proceedings of each conference, including the more informal exchanges between presenter and participants. The first Goshen Conference on Religion and Science took place in April 2001, with Nancey Murphy as it's keynote speaker. Dr. Murphy presented three public lectures at Goshen College, dealing with human identity, the concept of a moral basis for the universe, and evolution respectively. Three discussion sessions followed the lectures. These concentrated on physicalism, the embodiment of humans, and prayer related to God's action. This volume contains the full conference proceedings, edited by Goshen College professor of physics, Carl s. Helrich. The informal, oral nature of the presentations and exchanges has been kept. Readers will find the material accessible and thought-provoking. History
| Pilgrim Marpeck (ca. 1495-1556) was a dedicated Anabaptist leader
who was also a talented civil engineer. Markpeck possessed a keen
intelligence and a passion for spiritual and biblical theology. He was
one of the most original and eclectic Anabaptist thinkers. On larger
projects he wrote collaboratively, with a circle of like-minded
Anabaptists. Consequently, authorship of some writings has to be
ascribed not only to Markpeck, but to the "Markpeck Circle." Shortly
after 1600, however, his writings and his "circle" seemingly
disappeared. No distinct Marpeckite Anabaptist community survived the
17th century. This volume of writings by Pilgram Marpeck and his
Circle is the first of a planned set of three. All making available
previously untranslated writings. Copyright 1999. | | | | Anabaptism: Neither Catholic Nor Protestant | View shopping basket | | by Walter Klaassen

| A classic description of the Anabaptist movement. Walter Klalssen
shows how Anabaptists combined elements of Protestantism and
Catholicism into a third option that, he argues, has continuing
relevance for the present. This is especially true in the areas of lay
witness, peace and war, economics, and relationships with the state.
Klaassen's hope that increasing numbers of Protestants and Catholics
would enter into dialogue with the Anabaptist tradition has in fact
been realized. Today Anabaptism is accepted as part of the common
heritage of all Christians. | | | | Anabaptist History and Theology: Revised Student Edition | View shopping basket | | by C. Arnold Snyder

same narrative format and story line as the unabridged book. But the text
has been completely rewritten and redesigned to meet the needs of the
non-specialist reader. This second, revised edition features larger print and

History
| What is an appropriate response for Christians committed to nonviolence, when the country
in which they are living goes to war? This book provides one historical answer to the question.
Mennonite immigrants had been promised military exemptions when they settled in Russia in the
eighteenth century, but the nineteenth century brought changed circumstances, and called for a
new response. By the time of the outbreak of World War I, Mennonites in Russia had negotiated
alternatives to combatant military service in the form of work in forestry camps and the medical
corps. This book tells the story of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by means of an
historical introduction (Lawrence Klippenstein), diaries and memoirs (Jacob Dick, accessing his
father's story), and a rich collection of photographs. The immediacy of the diary accounts and the
graphic directness of the photographs preserve an important chapter of Mennonite history in
Russia. At the same time, the response of the church in that time and place poses questions that
continue to appear in the life of the Mennonite church world-wide. Copyright 2002. | | | | From Anabaptist Seed: The Historical Core of Anabaptist-Related | View shopping basket | | by C. Arnold Snyder

Russia
Cruise
| Mennonites of Dutch/German ancestry began emigrating from Prussia and
settling in the Ukraine in 1789, following invitations and guarantees granted
by Catherine II of Russia. One hundred years later, the Mennonites in Russia
had prospered. They now numbered some 70,000 persons living in progressive
settlements, leading the way in farming and manufacturing.
The Mennonites who settled in Russia kept their language, their religion, and
their culture intact. But as the nineteenth century drew to a close, Mennonite
community identity was increasingly seen as a threat. There was first a drive
for russification under the Czars; there then was increasing suspicion of all
things German with the outbreak of the First World War; and finally the
Bolshevik Revolution brought Christianity and prosperity into question. The
Second World War and its brutal Stalinist aftermath succeeded in destroying
life in the Mennonite colonies.
The first person accounts translated here tell the stories of people who almost
miraculously survived successive waves of revolution, civil war,
assassination, economic and political purges, and arbitrary arrest and
banishment. The stories of these survivors are just now beginning to be
published, in both German and Russian.
Sarah Dyck's selection and skillful translation of these memoirs opens a rare
window through which English readers can begin to grasp the reality of life in
the Soviet empire for those judged to be enemies of the People. These stories
provide graphic and personal documentation of a land and a people in
turmoil. | | | | Andreas Ehrenpreis and Hutterite Faith and Practice | View shopping basket | | by Wes Harrison

History
| The Hutterian Brethren, or Hutterites, had been practicing community of
goods for more than a century when Andreas Ehrenpreis was elected bishop
of the brotherhood in 1639. He was to occupy that office until his death in 1662,
some 23 fateful years.
In the face of severe crises, which included war, increased persecution, and
the complete expulsion of the Hutterites from their former homes in Moravia,
Ehrenpreis initiated a remarkable revival and reformulation of Hutterian
faith and practice.
Andreas Ehrenpreis' reforms left a lasting imprint on the Hutterites, leading
the historian Robert Friedmann to call Ehrenpreis the second founder of the
Hutterian Brethren. Nevertheless, no full-length study has ever been done on
the Hutterites of this period and their influential bishop. Wes Harrison thus
brings much needed light to this important chapter of the Hutterite
experience.
Harrison's ground-breaking study makes use of all available sources, the
majority of which have never before been analyzed. His work and approach
have been described as meticulous, mature research marked by empathy,
sound judgment, and scholarly integrity (Professor Werner Packull, Conrad
Grebel College, University of Waterloo).
Readers interested in the development of Radical Reforming groups, in the
history of communal Christian groups, and especially in the history and
development of the Hutterian Brethren, will want to read this detailed and
well-crafted book. | | | | The Limits of Perfection: A Conversation with J. Lawrence Burkholder | View shopping basket | | Edited by: Rodney J. Sawatsky and Scott Holland

| It is well known that first-generation Anabaptists immersed
themselves in scripture-but how did they interpret the Bible? What
verses were most important to them? How did the Bible shape their piety
and daily life? The Biblical Concordance of the Swiss Brethren,
available for the first time in English, goes a long way in providing
answers to these questions. In this early printed booklet, the Swiss
Brethren organized Old and New Testament passages under topical
headings beginning with the "Fear of God" and ending with "Child
Rearing" with over 60 more topical sections in between. | | | | Radical Faith: An Alternative History of the Christian Church | View shopping basket | | by John Driver
