Looking at some of the critical cargiving issues in the church today, Soul Care offers practical help to some not so easy to answer questions. Divided into ten chapters each chapter opens with the aim of the chapter, then moves to a description of the pastoral care problem under review and concludes by asking some penetrating questions for discussion, reflection and action. The first chapter looks at the biblical basis for caregiving. Two chapters deal with high-need factors in the church such as depression, suicide, money matters, to mention a few. The deacon and care group delivery systems for caregiving are looked at in more detail.

This book is intended as a training manual. However, it will not ask the easy questions and allow for one-word or one-sentence answers. It is a manual that will need a leader to guide you through the book. The questions are framed to enhance discussion and to help the congregational caregivers actively engage the issues that are highlighted. A brief bibliography is provided to help whet the appetite for more reading and additional training. Suggestions are also given of when outside help should be sought, thus relieving the caregivers of unnecessary burdens.
