Mennonite Central Committee
With programs in 50 countries, 1,000 workers and 10,000 part-time volunteers, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) generates countless stories.

The value of these stories lies even beyond their worth simply as a story. Each should prompt readers to ponder and discuss, "What would I have done if I had been there? Should Christians be prudent or prophetic? Are we to be pragmatic or faithful? Can we be both?" These issues may well be akin to contemporary ones in our home church and community.

Robert S. Kreider and Rachel Waltner Goossen chose a selection of stories from each decade of MCC history with significant episodes from six continents.

Evangelism
Bible Study
According to Pedrito U. Maynard-Reid, if you think evangelism and social action are totally different endeavors, then you are a product of Western culture.

Even today, many evangelicals are suspicious of social action, and many liberals are wary of personal evangelism. Followers of Jesus who accept both still face the problem of how to prioritize personal and social elements in outreach, or whether they should be ranked at all.

An overview of Luke-Acts calls us back to a biblical base. It reveals a wholistic, prophetic evangelism where personal and social concerns are dqually significant. Gospel proclamation, fellowship, and service offer hope to those under the weight of personal and social sins.

Mennonite Central Committee
Here is the epic story that has charmed Mennonite audiences for many years. Peter and Elfrieda Dyck share their World War II experiences of helping Mennonite Refugees escape from wartorn Europe and find new homes in South America and Canada. Many photos are included.

"In this century no story out of the Mennonite experience has captured the hearts and minds of all Mennonites and Amish groups as the story of the Berlin Exodus in 1947. The departure from Berlin in the early morning hours of January 30 of 1,200 Mennonite refugees from Russia is part of a larger epic of the movement of 12,000 uproooted Mennonites to new homes in Paraguay, Uruguay, and North America. It brings to memory the biblical narrative of the mighty works of God in that first Exodus."--Robert Kreider

Hesston, Kansas, 1990. Disaster strikes. A storm-damaged community lies in ruins. An eerie silence prevails. A few former residents wander aimlessly. A van with an unusual emblem on its side picks its way through the tangled streets, Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) volunteers are on the scene.

With photos and gripping accounts, Lowell Detweiler shows and tells the dramatic story of MDS. From its start in 1950 in Kansas, the movement spread across Canada and the U.S., and now MDS has reached its 50th anniversary, which this book helps to celebrate.

In the appendix is included an MDS timeline, a map of MDS regions, a list of the largest projects and number of days worked.

History
Faith
This work by Mennonite theologian-ethicist Burkholder was motivated by his own experience as a relief worker and United Nations administrator in China during the post-World War II years. Being confronted with the need to exercise public power, he was led to reassess and critique the traditional Mennonite approach to social ethics. From the introduction to this book, Burkholder says: "What impressed me most was the ambiguity of power. ... Eventually I came to see life dialectically according to which multiple demands required one to choose between equally valid but contradictory obligations." It is this dilemma, set over against the context of mid-century Mennonite ideas and ethos, with which he grapples. Copyright 1989.
